The main port of Santorini is named Athinios and serves passenger ferries and cargo. There is only one passenger terminal building that is usually very crowded during the peak season and you may not find a free place to sit. We recommend you arrive at the port about 45 minutes before the departure time.

How to get to Santorini Port by bus?

All the buses from the port go straight to Fira, but often make intermediate stops to the villages of Pyrgos, Karterados and Messaria. The buses usually meet the ferries, so passengers do not need to wait long time at the port. The bus fare from Athinios port to Fira is €2.20 per passenger, while for night routes (from 00:30 to 05:00) the cost is €2.80.

How to get to Santorini Port on a taxi?

At the port, there is a taxi station, where the taxis are waiting after the ferries arrival. However, many of them have been booked in advance. A taxi from the port of Athinios to Fira city costs from €15.00 to €20.00. Be prepared to be asked for extra taxi fees (for excess baggage and night transfers).

Insiders' Tip

If you want to find a free cab or a free sit on the bus towards Fira, when arriving at Santorini port, it is better to get off the ferry as quickly as possible.

There is no direct bus service between Santorini port and airport. The only way to go straight from Athinios to Santorini airport is on a taxi. Otherwise, you should go first to Fira main station and get a bus from there towards Santorini airport.

Getting around on Santorini by bus

If you want to get around on Santorini from one town to another, the best way is to travel by Santorini local buses that are operated by the KTEL transportation company. There are frequent bus routes from Fira to Imerovigli, Oia, Perissa, Kamari, Akrotiri and other destinations of the island. It is important to remember that all the bus routes start from and finish at Fira main bus station, meaning that if you want to go from Oia to Kamari for example, you have to change a bus at Fira. The bus tickets price vary from €1.80 to €2.30 depending on the destination and tickets are bought from the driver inside the bus. The busses are well served, always clean and air-conditioned. During high season can be overcrowded, so make sure you depart early in advance.

Getting around on Santorini on a taxi

Taxis are another transportation means in Santorini, but they are not preferred a lot, since the number of taxis is limited. Especially, after midnight, in high season, it can be very difficult to find a taxi. The longest drive on Santorini is from Oia to Akrotiri, about 45 minutes and the taxi fare shouldn’t be more than €25.00. The main taxi hub is in Fira, but there are always some taxis on Santorini International Airport and Athinios port, waiting to serve the travellers. Bear in mind that the taxis fares are fixed so ask the taxi driver about the price before getting into the cab.

Renting a car/quad or motorbike

Other ways to getting around on Santorini is renting a car, quad or motorbike. The truth is that it is more convenient, since you have the opportunity to stop wherever you desire without worrying about the bus timetables and waiting for them. The price of renting a car is about €40.00 per day and we strongly recommend you book in advance. Motorbikes are fun and cheap, yet many accidents have been reported as the roads can be dangerous for non experienced drivers.
