Ever seen pictures on Pinterest where people are sipping on wine in some fancy looking vineyard somewhere in a French province? Well if you are anything like us, you have been daydreaming of being in their shoes! Our dreams came true when we entered the Ktima Gerovassiliou estate to finally taste wine like a pro and live out our fantasy. It was everything we imagined it to be and more!
The winery is located just outside of Thessaloniki in the charming village of Epanomi, which reflects the province vibe we were craving. The first thing we noticed when entering the estate was the endless horizon of vineyards reaching all the way to the foothill of Mt Olympus. Needless to say, Ktima Gerovassiliou is quite unique compared to other wineries. We quickly noticed the artistic design of their estate, where the backyard is filled with modern art installations from various acclaimed contemporary Greek artists and the premises are well decorated to the tiniest detail. Every private tour of the winery starts with the few introductory statements where we learned that this is a family owned business and that the close family-like relationship is reflected in the way things are done in the winery. We instantly felt the cozy atmosphere among the family and staff and quickly became part of the family.
Throughout the tour we will learned how white and red wine is created, stored, and matured. The profound aromas of wine circulating the production area and cellar quickly increased our appetite to try their acclaimed wines! What really grasped our attention was the private wine museum the family has put together. In there, we saw the original amphoras that were used in ancient Greece for wine storing, along with creative bottle openers and cork skewers used decades ago. The most jaw dropping moment of the tour however was the private collection of over a thousand cork skewers that Mr. Gerovassiliou collected from all over the world. We especially admired how every step of the tour was well thought out with the guest experience always in mind.
In the wine tasting activity we were given 8 varieties of wine to taste. On average, wine tastings range from 4-6 glasses of wine but we made a special deal with Ktima Gerovassiliou to offer 8 glasses of wine just to our clients. We have to admit – we are proud of this exclusive deal; but whether you get a little too happy while drinking wine is totally out of our hand! The tasting consists of three red wines, four white wines and a special bonus for Grekaddicts: a dessert wine! This is a special opportunity to taste some of the most delicious Greek varieties such as Malagousia; as well as famous foreign wines such as Chardonnay. Each wine was different from the one before, making it hard for us to choose a favorite. We tried over and over to put in words the deliciousness of the wines we tasted but there is nothing to say that will pay them justice.
